"International Women's Day (IWD) has been around for over a hundred years, as have many of the issues still impacting women's advancement. Since 1911, IWD belongs to all who care about gender equality. Celebrate women's achievement. Raise awareness about discrimination. Take action to forge gender parity. All IWD activity is valid, that's what makes IWD so inclusive." ~ International Women's Day 2026 Website
No matter your gender, you've certainly been invited to attend some IWD events this month. And no matter your gender, you should attend some.
Not all.
That's not strategic.
I thought I'd give you a few Strategic Networking pointers to thrive as you navigate this incredible networking opportunity.
1. Select events. Attend a maximum of two networking events a week. Why? Because networking well requires preparation, participation, and follow-up activity. That takes time and time is limited.
2. Divide and conquer. Talk to a few switched-on people in your network about all the events you've been invited to and divide up the opportunities. Agree to meet up after the events to share experiences and to make introductions.
3. Arrive early. The best opportunities to connect with new people at a networking event where there are speakers or panels is BEFORE the formalities begin.
4. Wear an accessory that people will remember. Uniqueness and colour will help you stand out.
5. Take a breath. Before you walk into the event... think about why you're there. Focus on the mindset you have. Visualise a great outcome. (I have a Spotify playlist of songs that I listen to on the way to a networking event that remind me of these things. If you want a copy, let me know.)
6. Meet new people. Hanging around with people you already know the whole time won't grow your network. Of course, say hi, but make sure you meet new people, too.
7. Ask good questions. How does your business support gender equality throughout the year? How do you think we manage gender issues and equality in this organisation? What initiatives have you seen that you would like to use in your business?
8. Be generous. The theme for 2026 IWD is "Give to Gain." So, in every new connection, lead the conversation to how you can help them. A connection? A link? A meeting? A piece of information? A reason to reconnect!
9. Take immediate action. When you get into your car or onto the train... immediately make notes of the follow-up that you need to do.
10. HAVE FUN! Networking is really also a great opportunity to make new friends. Smile to yourself before you walk in. Be someone who wants to be there. If you arrive huffing and puffing from a busy or hectic day, it won't appeal to you or to the people you meet. Give yourself permission to HAVE FUN!
Hey... do you have a IWD event that you're hosting or attending? Share links to them here and let's all get out there!!!
